You simply couldn’t have scripted it better for Kyle Wood, who after nearly two and a half years out of the driver’s seat, returned to the circuit over the weekend at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway and dominated the second round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
The Queenslander reunited with the # 22 RF98 Van Diemen, that is engineered and maintained by Redback Motorsport, and managed to come away from the weekend by dominating qualifying and taking out all three race wins to complete what was a total domination of the second round of NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship which left his rivals gobsmacked. “At the end of 2006 the plan was to head overseas and I had a deal with Carlin Motorsport in the British Formula BMW Championship all lined up but when my funding fell through the deal fell through. I then decided to take a break from Motorsport altogether and concentrate on my studies,” the 23-year-old explained. “I have now completed my pharmacy degree and am a fully qualified pharmacist.” With his studies completed, Wood is now focused on re-establishing his motorsport career and his performance on the weekend certainly indicates that he still has plenty to offer. “My run at Wakefield Park was to mainly just keep my National licence up-to-date and not have it expire, and to be honest I was never expecting to have the weekend I had,” said Wood. “I would really like to finish the remainder of the year in the NSW Championship and see what opportunities arise for 2010, especially after having the weekend we just had, but that is all going to be depend on funding and we are really going to be working hard in that area, as it simply isn’t going to happen any other way.” Wood also wanted to make special mention of the support of Greg and Sonja from Redback Motorsport for their professionalism and all their ongoing support and assistance. “Greg and Sonja have become very good friends of my whole family and it was great for us to return to the circuit together. As one could imagine they were just as thrilled as I was by how well the weekend turned out,” Wood mentioned. “The support from Redback Motorsport has played a huge part in what I have achieved so far in motorsport and I really hope they can continue to be involved in my progression.” Apart from Redback Motorsport, Wood wanted to say a big thanks to Peter and Jamie Larner from Larner Race Engines, race car owner Richard Carr and of course all of his supportive family and friends. After his dominating weekend at Wakefield Park Raceway, Wood is hoping to be able to contest the third round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship that is to be held at Oran Park Raceway on the weekend of May 30 and 31.
