A maiden race victory was the highlight for Tom Tweedie’s during the second round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway last weekend.

Tweedie and his Anglo Australian Motorsport team-mate Ryan Simpson once again locked horns and little separated the two as they battled it out around the fast flowing 3.93km Eastern Creek circuit.

At the completion of the weekend it was Simpson that came out on top, but Tweedie was far from disgraced and came in a very close second, during the third and final race.

After qualifying second, Tweedie was fighting with Simpson for the lead up until the closing stages of the final lap only to spin out and let slip a winning opportunity and although able to recover he finished back in fourth place.

With the disappointment of the opening race ringing loud and clear in his mind, Tweedie was on a mission during the second race and after starting from fourth on the grid quickly made his way into second and after a few laps battling made his way to the front and from there never looked back and claimed his very first race victory in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship.

The battle between Tweedie and Simpson continued throughout the final race where very little separated them over the 8 lap distance. In a battle of slip streaming down the long main straight at Eastern Creek it was Simpson that was able to take full advantage of this and take control of the lead late in the race and despite the best efforts of Tweedie to reclaim the lead, he was unable to do so, and finished up in a credible second.

“My first race win in Formula Ford was the real highlight of my weekend, as was my thrilling battles with Ryan [Simpson] throughout all three races,” Tweedie said.

“I have proven that I have the speed and the ability to achieve race wins, and for the remainder of the year my focus is to win the championship and this weekend’s results have only strengthened those beliefs.”

Tweedie’s weekend results saw him consolidate his second placing in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings.

Oran Park Raceway is the venue for the third round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship on June 21 – 22.
