Despite unsuccessfully defending their NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship during the running of the final round at Oran Park Raceway last weekend, the Icon Motorsport team and their leading Ben Morley weren’t too disappointed with their efforts.

In what was looking to be a duplication of his round four winning performance at Oran Park Raceway earlier this year, Morley missed out on his second clean sweep of the year after finishing second behind championship winner Rob Storey in the third and final race. Up until the final race of the weekend Morley had dominated qualifying and both race one and two despite the close attention of Storey.

“I did everything I could in order to defend my championship, and it came down to the final race, and although I did my very best to crack Rob [Storey] under the pressure, he didn’t give in, and full credit to him as he is a very deserving champion,” Morley said.

“All I could do for the weekend was win races and hope that Rob struck some misfortune but that didn’t happen, and with that said; second place is still a very strong result and one that the entire Icon Motorsport team can be proud of.”

Morley was able to take some solace from losing the NSW State Championship, as he managed to end Storey’s six race winning streak.

“Heading into the final round Rob [Storey] had won the past six races, so to come out at Oran Park Raceway and break that winning streak, definitely proves the gains we have made with the Spectrum 09B,” he commented.

"There wasn't much between both Rob and I all year, so to finish the year off with a fantastic hard fought final race was awesome.

“I'd like to thank Derryn [Harrison] and the entire Icon Motorsport crew for the opportunity to drive again this year, along with Borland Racing Developments and Peter Race Engines for their support.”

Performing the double duties for the Icon Motorsport team over the weekend was Derryn Harrison in both the Formula Ford and Production Sports Car classes.

It was a very pleasing weekend for Harrison as he achieved top ten results in all three Formula Ford races, which was highlighted by a career best seventh place finish in the opening race, and he finished 11th outright, and first in class, for the one hour enduro event for Production Sports.

Harrison was naturally rapt with his weekend results, but did admit to performing the double duties as mentally draining.

“Although the body wasn’t too affected, but the mental drain was there, as my mind had to adjust from jumping from one car to another,” explained Harrison.

“Results wise, I’m very pleased with how the weekend panned out and it’s just a shame that the year is now over, as my results were very strong, but I can certainly take plenty of confidence into next year, that’s for sure.”

From an Icon Motorsport team owner’s perspective, Harrison, was in awe of the team’s effort, especially Ben Morley.

“Ben [Morley] continues to amaze me as he has done so much out on the track, but also off it, and I don’t know anyone that can perform both the role of team manager and driver, and achieve the results he has,” declared Harrison.

“I’m proud to say that in the four years of Icon Motorsport team operation we are yet to suffer any mechanical failures in any of our Formula Fords, and that is full credit to the superb efforts of both Ben and Brian Morley.”

With Morley finishing second in the NSW State Championship point standings, Harrison, driving the # 66 Icon Motorsport Spectrum 06B, strong final round result has netted him a top 10 finish in the top ten of the championship too.

In regards to 2008, the Icon Motorsport will be unveiling their exciting plans over the next month or so.
