Judging by the results that Icon Motorsport’s newest team member, Adam Lucas, has achieved in the opening two rounds of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship it’s hard to believe that he is a rookie. Lucas, driving the # 14 Icon Motorsport Spectrum 06B that is backed by Vodafone Mobile Advertising, is already up amongst the Top 5 runners and is mixing it with drivers that have far greater experience in only his second ever full race meeting. During the second round of the NSW Championship at the daunting Eastern Creek Raceway circuit over the weekend, Lucas managed to kick off the weekend by qualifying sixth with a 1:41.3196, and he then backed it up by finishing the three races in fifth, sixth, and fifth respectively. As one can imagine Lucas has been thrilled with his performances in the opening two rounds of the NSW Championship and says that the professionalism of the entire Icon Motorsport team has played a big part. “I cannot speak highly enough of the efforts of the Icon Motorsport team, as they are very professional, not only at preparing great race cars, but also allowing me to entertain my clients and it’s a pleasure to be able to bring them out to track so that they can see me race,” Lucas said. “My results in the opening two rounds of the NSW Championship have far exceeded my initial expectations, and with more track time I’m learning and my results have indicated that.
“The plan for the rest of the year is to just continue what I’m doing, and as I have quickly found out that the further you move up the field, the harder the racing becomes, so that is another exciting learning curve too.” "From a team perspective, Adam [Lucas] has done a fabulous job and once again our fearless leader [Ben Morley] has shown an ability to train, coach and encourage new drivers into the sport." After an impressive opening round of the NSW Championship, fellow Icon Motorsport driver, Derryn Harrison, had a mixed bag of results at Eastern Creek during round two driving the # 4 Icon Motorsport Spectrum 09B. The weekend for Harrison started off strongly by qualifying fifth with a 1:41.2622 which was the fastest lap he has ever recorded around the Eastern Creek circuit, but things turned pear shaped in the opening race when he spun out in the middle stages while well placed inside the Top 5 and as a result fell back to finish in 10th spot. For Harrison race two didn’t get any easier either when he finished back in 14th after he was hampered by an engine miss, and the weekend was capped off with a 12th place finish in the third and final race. "Considering the pace we showed throughout Friday and Saturday my results are very disappointing. That will go down as the most disappointing race weekend for me personally in my four years of Motorsport," commented Harrison “The car was on song all weekend it was just that I as a driver didn’t come to the party and the mistakes that I made were purely driver error, and nothing else, but I will bounce back.” Once again Harrison performed the double duties by also competing in the Production Sport Cars category driving the Icon Motorsport Mazda RX7. Harrison in race one finished second and two won class D, but in the final race a spectacular ‘360’ spin in turn one saw him miss out on victory in his class and he ended up finishing in second. “I quickly found out that you cannot go into turn one without braking and it saw me go into the ‘360’ spin which certainly got the heart racing,” Harrison added. The third round of the NSW Championship is to be held at Oran Park Raceway on the weekend June 21 - 22.
