The rookie season of Nathan Morcom in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship was completed at Eastern Creek Raceway last weekend and he rounded out the championship with a podium finish in the sixth and final round and also a Top 5 finish in the overall championship point standings.
Morcom’s weekend would have seen him finished qualifying and all three races in second spot had he not made an error in the second race when a wrong gear selection off the start line saw him drop back to the tail of the field and he was forced to fight his way back and finished in sixth. Other than the mishap in the second race Morcom was consistently quick all weekend long and his results indicate that as he qualified and finished both race one and three in second spot. In race two despite finishing back in sixth he still managed to set the second fastest lap time. Race 3, which is regarded as the trophy race, was where Morcom finished in second. At the completion of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship Morcom had finished fifth in the overall point standings and the 16-year-old was also the third highest placed rookie driver. The year as a whole has been one that has seen Morcom rise through the ranks and improve his results with each and every outing. “My aim for this year was to learn as much as I can and improve with each outing, and I’m happy that I have managed to achieve that,” the Anglo Australian Motorsport driver commented. “The NSW Championship is very tough as there is plenty of competition right through the field and I feel that it has prepared strongly for when I step up into the Australian Championship next year.” Throughout the year Morcom has proven that he has the pace to be a Top 3 contender, and as the year has progressed he has been able to match his speed with the results. Morcom is now looking forward to making the move into next year’s Australian Championship. In other Morcom news, the teenager recently competed in the City of Sydney Go Kart Title at Oran Park Raceway and came away with victory in the final for the Junior National Heavy class. This coming weekend (October 4 and 5) sees Morcom travel up to Port Macquarie to contest the NSW Go Kart Title. Morcom in 2008 is proudly supported by Rondo Building Supplies, Plastamasta Smithfield – Campbelltown and Canberra, and NSW Stretch Ceilings.
