For the fifth round of the NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship in succession, this time at Eastern Creek Raceway last weekend, leading Icon Motorsport driver Ben Morley has finished on the podium behind, but with only one round remaining his championship defence still remains well and truly alive. Despite Rob Storey moving further ahead in the championship point standings after another clean sweep, Morley finished second throughout all three races over the weekend, after qualifying in fourth place, aboard his # 1 Spectrum 09B and maintains his second place in the championship, although a further 12 points have been added to his rivals championship lead.

Although disappointed, Morley was gracious in his Eastern Creek defeat. “Rob [Storey] drove very strongly and had the best car package this weekend, and although disappointed, as no one likes to lose, but I admit, Rob was just too good for me on this occasion,” he conceded. “We made small changes to the car over the three races and got closer to Rob, but he was just too quick. We were going faster than when we were at Eastern Creek earlier in the year, but it wasn’t enough. So we will just have to go back to the drawing board and work on further improvements for the final round.” Morley and the Icon Motorsport team can take plenty of confidence into the final round at Oran Park Raceway, as that was the circuit where the Icon Motorsport team last scored a full round clean sweep in this year’s championship. It was a tough weekend for fellow Icon Motorsport driver, and team owner, Derryn Harrison, and he put it down mainly to a lack of recent seat time spent in his # 66 Spectrum 06B. After qualifying 13th Harrison struggled to make any impact on his objectives heading into the round, top 10 finishers, by recording 13th place in both race one and two and 12th in the third and final race.

“Over the weekend I just tried my very best to get my laps times down, but that just didn’t happen, as I never felt totally comfortable in the car in any of the three races, and that definitely reflected in my race results.” Oran Park Raceway, on the weekend of October 27 – 28, is the location and date for the final round of the NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship, where Morley and the Icon Motorsport team are desperate to hold onto their crown.
