There is no question about it; Nathan Morcom has shown that he has had the speed to be a front running contender and has proven so during the opening two rounds of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship. The Anglo Australian Motorsport driver endured a positive, yet character building weekend during the second round of the NSW Championship at Eastern Creek Raceway last weekend, and he came away with more experience under his belt that is no doubt going to serve him well for the remainder of the year. Once again, Morcom proved his pace during qualifying by recording the fourth fastest lap, and then in the opening race of the weekend he made a poor start and as a consequence dropped back to sixth spot and then as he fought his way back through the field suffered a spin on the fourth lap and fell back to 13th spot.Morcom managed to work his way up to finish the opening race in 11th place. There were plenty of positives to come out of Morcom’s result in race two when he was able to fight his way up seventh spot, and in the third and final race of the weekend he was on track to claim a Top 5 finish only for some bad luck to come into play and spoil such a result. During the closing laps of the final race Morcom’s Spirit Comtec WL08 developed a slipping clutch and he therefore finished down the order in a disappointing ninth. “I was having a real good dice with a number of drivers out there during the final race and had it not been for the slipping clutch I probably would have finished inside the Top 5,” remarked the 16-year-old. “I had a pretty tough run out there in race one and that pretty much made the going a little tougher for the rest of the weekend, but I was able to fight my way back and be able to be back in Top 5 contention by the end of the weekend. “I have proven that I have the pace to a Top 5 runner, now it’s just a matter of staying there when I manage to qualify there.” Morcom will next be in action at Oran Park Raceway on June 21 – 22 for the third round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship. In 2008 Morcom is proudly supported by Rondo Building Supplies, Plastamasta Smithfield – Campbelltown and Canberra, and NSW Stretch Ceilings. |
