Successive second podium finishes have advanced Daniel Lewis into the lead of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship for the first time in 2009.
Last year’s NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship ‘Rookie of the Year’ returned to his driving seat of his # 52 RF02 Van Diemen for the second round last weekend at Wakefield Park Raceway in Goulburn after being forced to lease a car from the Anglo Australian Motorsport team for the last month’s opening round at Eastern Creek Raceway due to damaging the rear end of his RF02 Van Diemen during practice earlier in the weekend. “It certainly wasn’t the most ideal starts to the year but the pleasing thing is that we didn’t drop out of contention for this year’s NSW Championship and after two rounds we have hit the NSW Championship lead and hopefully we can do enough to stay there for the remaining four rounds,” Lewis enthused. “We had a positive good run at Wakefield Park by finishing in second place and that backed up our second place at the opening round in an unfamiliar race car.” Lewis’ weekend at Wakefield Park started off by qualifying in fourth for the opening race. In the opening race, Lewis was in the wars as he had a coming together early on and that dropped him down the order but he was able to fight his way back to finish third. Both race two and three resulted in Lewis improving his race one result by finishing in second on both occasions behind round winner Kyle Wood. In between rounds one and two Lewis has made a number of improvements to his RF02 Van Diemen and he has certainly noticed an improvement from the get go. “There were some positives to come out of our rear end failure at the opening round as we were able to update a few things in the engine and I have definitely noticed the difference,” he noted. The focus for Lewis now is the next round of the NSW Championship that is to take place on May 30 and 31 at Oran Park Raceway and it is a circuit that he likes very much. “I cannot wait for the next round as it is at Oran Park and it is a circuit where I enjoyed a lot of success last year as I finished on the podium for the round twice in the NSW Championship and also contested the Australian Championship round there,” said Lewis. “It should be very interesting to see how the weekend pans out. I hope to be able to contend for race wins and if all goes to plan we can break through for my first round victory in the NSW Championship.” Lewis would like to say a special thanks to both Peter Smith & Co. Registered Surveyors and Lewis Excavations for their support. -ENDS RELEASE- |
