There was plenty of fight shown from Daniel Erickson during the sixth round of the New South Wales (NSW) State Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway over the weekend (September 22 – 23) on his way to his third podium finish of the 2007 season.

The CAMS Rising Star driver had to work hard for his third place finish in the third and final race after he failed to finish the opening race, due to contact with another car on the opening lap, and came from the rear of the grid in the second race to finish an impressive fifth. During the third and final race Erickson managed to fend off challenges from both Chris Goodman and Tom Tweedie to finish in a solid third.

Erickson’s third place result has only strengthened his third place ranking in the NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings heading into the final round next month at Oran Park Raceway.

“It was a strong fight back after we failed to finish the opening race and from there we managed to land a podium result at the completion of the weekend,” enthused the driver of the CAMS Rising Star / Borland Racing Development supported Spectrum 010B.

“We had good pace in qualifying [second] and was looking forward to finishing inside the top three all weekend but a spanner was thrown into the works on the opening lap of the opening race and we had to work our way forward from there.

“Fifth place from the rear of the grid in the second race, and finishing on the podium in the third race is something I count as good result, but it was just a shame that we couldn’t have given both [Rob] Storey and [Ben] Morley a better run due to our set back earlier in the weekend.”

For Erickson the opening race incident over the weekend was his first DNF for what has been an impressive debut year in Formula Ford.

The final round of the NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship is to be held at Oran Park Raceway on October 27 – 28, which is the rescheduled third round from June.
