After momentarily losing command of the 2009 NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship; Leigh Burges over the weekend at Oran Park Raceway during the third round managed take back the lead by scoring his second clean sweep of the year.

There was simply no stopping Burges throughout the third round of the NSW Championship as the Anglo Australian Motorsport team driver dominated qualifying and all three races driving the # 33 Spirit WL08.

Burges was thrilled to be able to duplicate his opening round performance, after a tough run during the second round in April at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway where he finished fourth overall and consequently lost his lead in the point standings, and also take back the lead in the NSW Championship point standings in the best possible fashion.

“It was great to bounce back to victory lane after the previous last round of the NSW Championship left me fairly disappointed,” commented the 24-year-old. “The main focus for the whole weekend was to just try and recapture the valuable NSW Championship points that we lost during the last round and thankfully we were rewarded with a clean sweep of the weekend and take back the NSW Championship lead.”

Despite enjoying a fabulous weekend, Burges certainly didn’t make the best of starts to the weekend when he crashed early on in practice on Friday morning between turns one and two.

“Crashing in practice is definitely not the ideal way to start your weekend,” remarked Burges. “We missed the remainder of the practice sessions on the Friday as we had to fix the damage and it robbed us of valuable track time. Thankfully I was able to come out on Saturday and post the quickest lap in qualifying and then take out all three races as it kind of made up for my mistake on Friday.”

With the NSW Championship now back in his grasp; Burges is very much looking forward to contesting the next round of the NSW Championship which is at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway on the weekend of July 4 and 5. The Eastern Creek circuit was where the opening round of the NSW Championship back in March and it was where Burges dominated proceedings by claiming pole position and winning all three races.

“I cannot wait to get back to Eastern Creek and the goal is to consolidate my lead in the NSW Championship with another victory,” added an upbeat and confident Burges.

Burges would like to thank Tim Beale and the whole Anglo Australian Motorsport team for all their support along with Spirit Racing Cars.
