There was only one objective for Leigh Burges heading into last weekend’s sixth and final round of the 2009 NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Oran Park Raceway and that was to win and it was exactly what he managed to do.
With his fate in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship sealed at the previous round, Burges was aiming to finish the year the way he started – with a victory and he also wanted to farewell Oran Park Raceway in winning fashion too as it was the last ever race meeting at the circuit before it closed forever at the end of this year. “Oran Park Raceway is a very special circuit to me as it was where I did a lot of my Go Karting and I also regard it as one of my favourites in the Formula Ford,” expressed Burges. “Winning the final ever Formula Ford race meeting is something pretty special to me, my family and the Anglo Australian Motorsport team and we now go down in history.” Burges’ victory in the final round of the NSW Championship over the weekend was his fifth round success of the year and he managed to get through it with yet another clean sweep of qualifying and all three races. For Burges in each of his five round wins in the NSW Championship this year he has been able to go through all of the races undefeated. “There is a bit of pressure when you get on start a bit of a winning streak but it is something that you just have to block out and take each race as it comes,” Burges explained. “Winning 80% of this year’s NSW Championship rounds is a great achievement and I know very well that without the full support of Tim Beale and the Anglo Australian Motorsport team none of it would have been possible.” Paying homage to the Sydney based Anglo Australian Motorsport the # 33 Spirit WL08 driver added. “The Anglo Australian Motorsport team are such a professional team and being under their banner has allowed me to focus on my driving throughout the year,” he said. “In each race I went over in this year the Anglo Australian Motorsport provided me with the best machinery and they certainly played a vital part in my NSW Championship success and this victory as much theirs as it is mine.” Plans for next year will see Burges make his debut in the NSW Under 2 Litre Improved Production Championship. Future plans also involve a full-time Formula 3 drive after a successful test day recently. Burges was invited down to Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria by the Australian Formula 3 Association to drive the R-Tek Team race car. Burges would like to thank Tim Beale, the whole Anglo Australian Motorsport team and Jeff Senior and Stephen Austin from the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Association for all their support throughout the year along with Spirit Racing Cars. -ENDS RELEASE- |
