Burges Extends Winning Ways and Championship Lead PDF Print E-mail

Consolidation was the objective for Leigh Burges heading into the fourth round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship last weekend at Eastern Creek Raceway and he managed to achieve that in the best possible fashion.

For the third occasion this year, the Anglo Australian Motorsport team driver came away with a clean sweep of the round that resulted in him taking out qualifying and then driving to three convincing race wins.

Burges’ latest round success has now extended his lead in the current NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings over his nearest rivals in both Daniel Lewis and Adam Leung.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend and it was the best possible way to help my NSW Championship chase,” expressed Burges, who now holds a large lead in the NSW Championship point standings after four completed rounds. “My Comtec Spirit K08 didn’t need to be touched all weekend as the Anglo Australian Motorsport team managed to pin point a strong setup on Friday during practice and it worked so well that we didn’t need to adjust much from qualifying right through to the final race.”

With three round wins and a total of nine race wins, Burges isn’t too concerned about breaking any records as his sole focus is winning the NSW Championship.

“It’s great to have round and race wins but the focus for me is the overall NSW Championship and nothing else,” Burges said. “Winning rounds is certainly not doing my NSW Championship chances any harm whatsoever, but I am tending to focus more on improving my personal lap times and remaining as consistent as possible throughout the whole weekend. In terms of the NSW Championship, if I can remain consistent and improve my laps then the rest should take care of itself."

Although he sits comfortably at the top of the NSW Championship point standings, Burges is not getting too far ahead of himself.

“There are still two rounds remaining and although I am in a strong position there is still a lot that can happen between now and the final round,” explained the 24-year-old. “I know I have a great race car in the Comtec Spirit K08 and the support of a wonderful team in Anglo Australian Motorsport and it’s all up to me now as a driver to go on with the job."

Burges wanted to make a special mention to the six drivers and their teams that travelled over from Western Australia to compete on the weekend and that they were all a pleasure to race with. In particular, Rhys McNally from the Fastlane Racing team as they had a great and clean dice for the lead during the early stages of the second race.

The fifth and penultimate round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship is to be held at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway on the weekend of September 12 and 13.

Burges would like to thank Tim Beale and the whole Anglo Australian Motorsport team for all their support along with Spirit Racing Cars.
