Simpson Moves Closer 2008 NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship: PDF Print E-mail

With one round left of the 2008 NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship, Ryan Simpson has all but clinched the championship after taking out victory in round five that was held over the weekend at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway.

Back in April earlier this year the Anglo Australian Motorsport driver made his Formula Ford debut during the opening round of the NSW Championship and it saw him qualify on pole position and win all three races, and on his return to the circuit, he was close to duplicating that performance, but it didn’t happen.

After winning all four rounds of the NSW Championship so far this year, Simpson’s weekend saw him qualify on pole position for the fifth round and he was looking good to take victory in the opening race only to have an uncharacteristic spin. This spin cost Simpson the win, and he finished back in third place.

With the disappointment of his spin costing him the race one victory, Simpson was hell bent on making sure that he returned to victory lane, and return he did, as he dominated both race two and three. For Simpson his winning record in this year’s NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship to 13 from 15 race wins, and it was also his fifth round victory from as many starts. “I stuffed up in the opening race and it cost me a win, but mistakes can creep in from time to time, it’s just part of the learning experience, and what was more pleasing is that I was able to come back and take out the next two races,” commented Simpson, who drives the # 16 Parramatta Smash Repairs supported Comtec Spirit WL08, and over the weekend came very close to the existing lap Formula Ford currently held by V8 Supercar gun Jamie Whincup set back in 2002.

“I’m now very close to wrapping up the NSW Championship and the final round is going to be very important, so the goal is to just claim points and seal the championship.”

The sixth and final round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship is to be held at Eastern Creek Raceway on September 27 – 28.

Simpson would like to say a special thanks to Parramatta Smash Repairs and Anglo Australian Motorsport for all their ongoing support.
