The organisers of the NSW Formula Ford Championship are currently considering a proposal to introduce the Formula Ford (Duratec) cars into the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship races as from 2010.

The AMRC have been considering the approval of the introduction of Formula Ford (Duratec) into State level racing on a nation-wide basis, but are yet to release their final recommendation.

The original preference was for Formula Ford (Duratec) to be part of the Category 1 racing car races, however the recent decline in competitor numbers in NSW for 2009, has caused a review of this position.

Over the past two decades, the NSW championship has provided close and exciting racing for Formula Ford 1600 cars, and competitors were seeking the Championship to be maintained solely for the “Kent” engined Formula Fords, however the lack of competitors in 2009 has caused a reconsideration of the current status.

“We have come under increasing pressure to maintain competitor numbers so as to continue to secure a stand alone race within the NSW Championship race meeting programme,” commented Series Organiser Jeff Senior.

“Failing to have sufficient competitors to justify a stand alone race will mean having to be combined with other categories most likely with “winged” racing cars”.

The Formula Ford Association believes it is paramount that the category maintains a significant presence in the NSW championship, and avoids being combined with other categories.

To achieve this will require either a significant increase in current competitors of Formula Ford 1600 chassis, or, as is proposed, to open up the races to also permit the National Formula Ford “Duratec” cars.

The current option is for Formula Ford 1600 to retain the principal NSW State championship status with the National Formula Ford category being eligible for class championship classification, until sufficient cars compete to permit State Championship classification.

If the proposal is accepted, the Championship will cater for the following cars:
- Formula Ford 1600 – championship
- Formula Ford 1600 – Class Pre-2000, Pre-90, Historic
- Formula Ford (Duratec) – Class or championship depending on numbers

The Formula Ford and Formula Ford 1600 cars will not be separated during competition, but race as a united body, as do other class structured categories.

The Association believes that the 2010 championship proposal would be strongly supported by all Formula Ford competitors and, would return to a strong and healthy championship.

Any decision for the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship will be based upon the final recommendation of the AMRC.

The organisers are open to comments by interested parties before a final decision is made: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
