So far this year in the Formula Ford ranks it’s been nothing other than a Ryan Simpson and Tom Tweedie show, but as the fifth round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship heads down to Wakefield Park Raceway in Goulburn this weekend (August 16 - 17) their rivals are hoping to deny the pair of more success.
Anglo Australian Motorsport team drivers, Simpson and Tweedie, have been beating their rivals by comfortable margins, as throughout the championship so far there has only been one spot left for the other driver’s in the field to try and land on the podium, third spot. Both Simpson and Tweedie dominated the last round held at Wakefield Park back in April and they have been in fine form this year with the majority of wins been taken out by Simpson, although Tweedie has never far behind him. Round five of the championship could be a little different though as the other drivers are desperately trying to get their hand on a podium finishHeading into this weekend’s round with plenty of confidence is teenager Nathan Morcom who has been a shining star this year. Having been successful in a number of races this year, perhaps this weekend could have the third Anglo Australian Motorsport driver take home that elusive podium position in the third and final race. South Coast based Daniel Lewis will also be another driver to watch out for as he has managed to grace the podium during the third and fourth rounds, incidentally both fought out at Oran Park Raceway. Other drivers to keep an eye on include Adam Lucas, Bruce McCabe, Matthew Howard, Derryn Harrison, James Stewart, and Russell Newell, who are all eager to register strong results around the 2.2km Wakefield Park circuit. Victorian Team G-Force Motorsport will have two drivers in Mygale chassis’s for this round, and they could quite possibly throw a spanner in the works to the NSW Championship front runners. The race schedule for round five will include qualifying and race one on Saturday and race two and three on Sunday. Round five is to certainly going to give out plenty of exciting race action as everyone is determined to finish on the podium although there are only three places on the podium up for grabs. Latest NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings (after four completed rounds): 1 Ryan Simpson – 356 points 2 Tom Tweedie – 3083 Bruce McCabe – 228 4 Daniel Lewis - 210 5 Nathan Morcom - 205 For more information about the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship or Wakefield Park Raceway visit: www.ff1600.org.au or www.wakefieldpark.com.au |
