The results of the Icon Motorsport team drivers, Adam Lucas and Derryn Harrison, during fifth and penultimate round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship at Wakefield Park Raceway certainly didn’t reflect the pace they had shown over the course of the weekend.
Both Lucas and Harrison showed that they had the pace to be Top 5 runners at the weekend but unfortunately it wasn't to be. In fact, during the third and final race Lucas, driving the # 14 Vodafone Mobile Advertising backed Spectrum 06B, was up to third place during the middle stages of the race only to be spun out due to contact from a driver behind him. Despite regathering and returning to the circuit, Lucas had his hopes of a podium finish dashed and eventually finished in sixth. Race one resulted in Lucas working his way up to seventh place after qualifying down in ninth due to understeer problems, and during race two he spun out on his own while he sat inside the Top 5 but worked his way back to finish sixth. For Lucas, this was to be his final round of the NSW Championship series for the year, and the rookie driver certainly showed plenty of promise as he had managed to be a Top 5 contender on a consistent basisFellow Icon Motorsport driver and team owner, Harrison, steering his # 66 Icon Motorsport supported Spectrum 09B, didn't start the weekend in the best of fashion as he qualified 12th, but in the opening race he finished in ninth. The second race saw Harrison lucky to miss an early incident and improved on his opening race result to finish eighth. Things improved for Harrison during the third and final race when he moved up to sixth. Once up to sixth Harrison made a mistake which resulted in a spin and that saw him to drop down the field and cross the finish line in a disappointing 11th. Icon Motorsport team manager, Ben Morley, said that over the weekend the results of both Lucas and Harrison wasn’t a true indication of the speed that they had shown. “They didn’t have the best of weekends and had it not been for a little bit of bad luck their outcomes could have been a lot better,” reflected Morley.“Although they both had slow starts to the weekend by qualifying poorly, they showed that they were capable Top 5 runners by weekends end, in particular Adam [Lucas] who was up to third during the final race. "It's disappointing that Adam [Lucas] is unable to compete in the final round of the championship due to the fact he will be getting married to his long time girlfriend Angela. His debut year in Formula Ford has been a very impressive one indeed considering his lack of experience; it's been a pleasure to be a part of it."The sixth and final round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship is to be held at Eastern Creek Raceway on September 27 – 28.
