It has been a result that he has sought after all year long during his rookie year in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship, and over the weekend during the fifth and penultimate round at Wakefield Park Raceway, teenage Anglo Australian Motorsport driver Nathan Morcom managed to achieve podium success.
So far this year, Morcom has finished on the podium on many occasions in both race one and two, but with the way the NSW Championship is structured the third and final race is regarded as the trophy race. During the fifth round of the NSW Championship at the Wakefield Park Raceway circuit last weekend, Morcom charged his way into a third place finish on the podium in the third and final race after starting from grid position seven. Another positive for Morcom was the fact that he recorded the second fastest lap of the third race aboard his # 71 Comtec Spirit WL08. Morcom, after qualifying fourth, was unlucky during the opening race where he broke a gear lever, leaving his car stuck in fourth gear, and finished back in 11th. Things improved during the second race for Morcom when he managed to miss an earlier race incident further up the field and went on to finish in seventh. In regards to his last visit to the Wakefield Park Raceway circuit, which was back in April and was also his Formula Ford debut, Morcom improved his lap times dramatically since then. For Morcom his first trophy in Formula Ford competition was one that the 16-year-old was thrilled about. “I have had the pace all year to be a podium contender and just haven’t had the lucky breaks in the final race, and this result is just another indication of yet another step in a positive direction,” he said. “There is only one round remaining in the championship and the goal for then will be to finish on the podium again, and I’m confident I can achieve that.” Morcom remains in fifth in the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings. The sixth and final round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship is to be fought out on September 27 – 28 at Eastern Creek Raceway. Morcom in 2008 is proudly supported by Rondo Building Supplies, Plastamasta Smithfield – Campbelltown and Canberra, and NSW Stretch Ceilings.
