Icon Motorsport drivers, Derryn Harrison and Adam Lucas, endured mixed results during the third round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship last weekend at Oran Park Raceway.

Yet again, the newest member to the Icon Motorsport team, Lucas, driving the Vodafone Mobile Advertising supported Spectrum 06B, impressed and the highlight of the weekend was his third place finish in the second race.

Lucas, who had qualified fifth, was right up there during the opening race battling it out for third place only to spin and sustain damage to the front end. A quick trip back to the pits saw the Icon Motorsport to fix the damage and Lucas was able to continue on in the race and finish in 13th.

The highlight of the weekend for Lucas was during the second race after he was forced to start from the rear of the grid, and the rookie driver in only his third ever race meeting managed to charge his way up through the field to finish in third place.

With his confidence sky-high heading into the third and final race of the weekend Lucas made a great start and held down second place for the opening lap. On the second lap Lucas dropped back to third and that was when he became involved in an entertaining battle for the final spot on the podium with Nathan Morcom.

Throughout the third race Lucas and Morcom fought it out and in the closing stages saw Lucas execute a spin entering the second turn which he recovered from to hold down fourth spot and his disadvantaged was soon turned into his advantage when the safety car came out soon after. At the restart Morcom and Lucas continued their battle and a few turns later it all turned to disaster when Lucas locked his rear brakes heading into a corner and it saw him make heavy contact with Morcom. Lucas suffered rear end damage and was unable to continue. Lucas immediately sort out Morcom after the race to apologise for the incident which cost Morcom a number of places.

"Icon Motorsport team owner, Derryn Harrison, was impressed with the sportsmanship displayed by his new team-mate, commenting "It was courtesy certainly not afforded by all in the pit lane after racing incidents."

Although it was a disappointing way to end the weekend, Lucas was still able to draw plenty of positives from his performance.

“It was disappointing to have not finished the weekend with a better result, as our results certainly don’t reflect the speed and improvement we had showed over the weekend,” Lucas said.

“Without a doubt the highlight of the round was my race two result, as I was able to come from the back of the grid up to third place, and that is certainly a performance that will stay in the memory bank for quite some time.”

Fellow Icon Motorsport team-mate, Derryn Harrison, certainly had a busy weekend where he competed in both the Formula Ford and Production Sports Car categories.

In the Formula Fords Harrison made a great start to the weekend driving his # 66 Spectrum 09B to qualify sixth and finish the opening race in fourth place. Unfortunately race two and three didn’t show similar results as Harrison was in the wars and failed to finish either of the two races.

“I made contact with the wall during the second race while I was running in third place as I slipped a wheel off the circuit and that sent me into the wall. The car suffered damage all down the left hand side of the car,” explained Harrison.

“The Icon Motorsport team did a wonderful job to get my car fixed in time for the third race and during the middle of the third race I had the rear left wheel shear off the hub and I failed to finish.”

As one can imagine it certainly wasn’t the end result Harrison was hoping for after such a promising start.

The Production Sports Car category brought some joy for Harrison as he drove the # 43 Icon Motorsport supported Mazda RX7 to victory in Class D.

The Icon Motorsport team will make a return to Oran Park Raceway on the weekend of July 26 – 27 for the fourth round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
