CAMS are preparing a final submission to the NSW Motor Vehicle Sports Licensing Advisory Council (MVSLAC) for later this month in a last ditch effort to gain approval for 14 and 15 year olds to compete in circuit racing in NSW.
The submission, expected to be made at the end of October or early November, will hopefully address the concerns of the MVSLAC believed to be related to the effect of accidents on these younger drivers, as well as their perception of hazard risks whilst driving. Currently drivers aged 14 and 15 are not premitted to race in any circuit racing event in NSW, despite approval being granted throughout the rest of the country. The MVSLAC had, earlier this year, rejected an application by CAMS for a lowering of the minimum age for drivers to compete in circuit racing in NSW, throwing the 2009 racing plans of some prospective drivers into disarray. "We were looking forward to working with these younger drivers this year as they progressed their racing programmes" commented Series Organiser Stephen Austin, "however the MVSLAC felt it not appropriate for these drivers to compete". 15 year old Mitchell Evans has been a stand out at the quality of driving these youngsters can bring, which has been further supported by the recent addition of 15 year old Matthew Brabham to the CAMS Rising Star team to compete in the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2010. The effects have meant that NSW is unable to hold a round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship during 2009, and at this stage nor in 2010 as the calendar for 2010 is about to be finalised. "The late addressing of this situation is again paying havoc with driver programmes for 2010" said co-organiser for the NSW Formula Ford Championship, Jeff Senior. "Many don't know whether they are in a position to go Formula Ford racing in NSW next year or not, and they need to make a decision soon". "We have some exciting plans for these drivers, to assist them in their driving and development, and hope the MVSLAC can agree to the permitting of these drivers to compete", said Senior. An announcement is due mid November of the decision by the MVSLAC.
