The approval by CAMS to a lowering of the minimum age for circuit racing in Australia to as young as 14 has been opposed by the NSW Motor Vehicle Sports Licensing Advisory Council (MVSLAC).
CAMS had previously advised pre-emptively that the reduction was approved, however it has now been confirmed that this was still to be subject to Government approval. The effect is that whilst drivers aged 14 and above are able to obtain a CAMS licence for circuit racing, those under 16 are currently prohibited from racing in NSW. They may compete in other states which have approved the age reduction. Understandably, the organisers of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship are disappointed at the opposition to this proposal and are working with CAMS to have this matter resolved as a matter of urgency. “This has put the plans of some interested parties on hold at the moment” stated Series co-organiser Stephen Austin, “It is a bad position to be in when you can compete as a 14 year old in every other state other than NSW, however we must adhere to the requests of the MVSLAC and work to overcome the concerns raised by the Committee”. “CAMS are liaising with fellow bodies around the world to obtain suitable research data to support the arguments to allow these drivers into circuit racing and dispel the fears of the MVSLAC” It is understood the issues raised by the MVSLAC related to the effect of accidents on these younger drivers, as well as their perception of hazard risks whilst driving. No date has been set for when the matter will be resubmitted to the MVSLAC at this stage, however CAMS are keen to have it cleared up as soon as possible to give certainty to all those affected, including the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship. CAMS CEO Graham Fountain stated that this outcome “will adversely affect both the national application of this policy and the potential for young drivers”. [END] |
