Not only is the racing season starting to sizzle but the battle for the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship has surfaced a thrilling two-way title fight heading into round three at Oran Park Raceway (Narellan, NSW) this weekend (June 16-17).

Icon Motorsport’s Ben Morley (Spectrum 09b) took his second consecutive round win of the season last month at Eastern Creek Raceway; however Rob Storey (Spirit WL07) from Anglo Australian Motorsport will be the favourite to put up a fierce challenge. The three-race event is sure to bring more down-to-the-wire competition as both drivers prepare to battle for the lead and the outright win around the technical 2.2km circuit.

The three-race event is sure to bring more down-to-the-wire competition as both drivers prepare to battle for the lead and the outright win around the technical 2.2km circuit.

Last year, Storey came out of the box at round three of the championship to end Morley’s winning streak of seven consecutive victories. Although this year Storey is yet to win a round – despite his two race wins so far this year – having advanced into the championship lead with a five point buffer is the determination boost he needs to achieve the same feat.

Coming off his best round result of third – and first podium of the year – local and CAMS Rising Star driver Daniel Erickson (Spectrum 010B) is aiming to replicate that effort while team-mate Scott Pye is looking to bounce back into front running form. After a challenging second round with his Spectrum 010b suffering substantial crash damage in practice, Pye is ready to end his recent run of numerous rebuilds to hopefully turnaround his fortune heading into the remainder of the series.

Other in-form drivers to keep an eye on will be Sydneysider and Storey’s Anglo Australia Motorsport team-mate Tom Tweedie (Stealth Van Diemen) after consistent top four finishes last round. Putting aside Team Sydney Motorsport ace Glenn Welch’s race three mechanical dramas from Eastern Creek, both his and Chris Goodman’s recent competitive form is certain to put their campaigns among the frontrunners once again.

Round three of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship kicks off this Saturday (June 16) with qualifying followed by race one in the afternoon. Sunday (June 17) will showcase the remaining race two and three.
