New South Wales (NSW) State Formula Ford 1600 championship contender Rob Storey has regained the championship lead from reigning champion Ben Morley after competing impressively with triple race victories at round five last weekend (August 11-12) at Wakefield Park Raceway (Goulburn, NSW).

Having gone into the event with a seven point deficit, Storey (Anglo Australian Motorsport Spirit WL07) now sits 11 points ahead of Morley (Icon Motorsport Spectrum 09B) on the championship points ladder with only two rounds remaining until the title is crowned.

Emulating the clean sweep of sessions that Morley achieved at round four, Storey too took pole position – by an extremely close 0.07 seconds – and lead home the minor podium placers of CAMS Rising Star driver Daniel Erickson (Spectrum 010B) and Morley respectively in all three races after an exciting and incident filled weekend of racing at the 2.2km Goulburn circuit.

Weekend standout mentions notably belonged to fourth-fastest qualifier Erickson along with Queenslander Andrew Hagen (Steel Power RF01 Van Diemen). Hagen particularly, who’s form this year has mostly been seen at the bottom end of the top ten, changed his fortune into a regular top five runner this weekend, including a stellar start with a runner-up time in qualifying. His best so far, Hagen went on to finish with two fourth places and a fifth while regularly mixing with the front-runners.

Jake Chapman (Kangan Tafe Spectrum 010B) also started to show his abilities with some consistent performances all weekend, showing he has the speed to mix it with the front runners. With the championship heading to the tracks for a second time, Chapman is sure to show greater improvement in the remaining rounds

Despite losing two spots on the first lap of both the second and the third and final Trophy race, Erickson resiliently raced back to form in both events against strong competition from Morley, clearly earning the stripes of his runner-up trophy by weekend’s end.

Morley was unfortunate to lose a higher podium finish in the first race after slipping on oil on the track and falling back in the pack. This was further exacerbated by contact with Hagen in race two after a clash on lap seven allowed Erickson to race past – and Hagen falling back three places – but that didn’t stop the 2006 state champion’s never-say-die attitude to make ground back up and continue his run of podium finishes.

Glenn Welch (Team Sydney Motorsport Listec Wil 05) was able to resurrect another horrible start to the weekend. After initially making contact with Tom Tweedie (Anglo Australian Motorsport) in race one where both steerers failed finish, Welch climbed to sixth in race two only to again suffer another racing blow after he made contact with Chris Goodman (Spectrum 010B). With both suffering suspension damage that ended their respective racing campaigns, Welch was unable to back up his last round podium result and without those extra valuable points, and has dropped down the championship ladder as a result.

Due to family illness CAMS Rising Star driver and round one star Scott Pye was unable to contest this round.

The next round of the highly competitive NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship will next be held at Eastern Creek Raceway (Sydney, NSW) on September 22-23.

Current NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings:
1 Rob Storey - 320
2 Ben Morley - 309
3 Daniel Erickson - 268
4 Tom Tweedie - 214
5 Jake Chapman – 196
