It was regarded by many as a weekend that saw some of the best racing witnessed in a number of years in the NSW Formula Ford Championship and the second round of the year at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway had a little bit of everything.
Anglo Australian Motorsport driver Adam Leung enjoyed his strongest weekend of his short career in Formula Ford by taking out the round honours in the NSW Championship and in the process taking command of the Championship point standings. After qualifying and finishing the opening race in behind Anglo Australian Motorsport team-mate Richard “Spike” Goddard, Leung was able to take the lead in the second race and then back up that result with another triumph in the third and final race to secure what was his maiden round victory. In what was without a doubt a career best drive, Ryan Campbell claimed second and third placings in the first two races and capped off the weekend with a third place finish behind Goddard in the final race and as one would expect, he was over the moon with the result. The ‘Fiesta’ class saw Listec Racing driver Alan Price set the early pace after topping the time sheets in qualifying and then scored a sensational victory in the opening race. Price chased after leader and round one victor Synergy Motorsport driver Daniel Cotton for the entire distance before he was able to make his charge for the lead on the last corner of the final lap to steal the spoils away from Cotton as they came up to lapped traffic. The second race, which was marred by an extensive safety car period, was taken out by Price who proved that his opening race victory was no fluke. Cotton made a sensational move at the end of the straight to take the lead from Price, only to run out of road and rejoin the race down the field finishing third behind Synergy Motorsport team-mate Stefan Borsato. The third and final race saw an all the way win going to youngster Borsato, who never put a foot wrong throughout the race and managed to withstand the attention of second and third place Price and Cotton to clinch his maiden victory. Goddard was the NSW Championship outright and ‘Kent’ class leader heading into the second round and showed plenty of pace throughout the weekend but a DNF in the second race ruined his weekend. Goddard had qualified quickest of the Kent Class and was first of the Kent Class to pass the chequered flag, only to strike misfortune in the second race when he spun out at the top of the 2.2km Wakefield Park circuit on the second lap and was unfortunately collected in the process by rookie team-mate Jon Collins. From the back of the field in the third and final race Goddard fought his way forward to finish in second place behind Leung. Unfortunately for Anglo Australian Motorsport rookie Jon Collins his weekend came to a premature end after his crash with Goddard on the second lap of race two. Collins’ car sustained substantial front end damage that was unable to be repaired in time. Daniel Lewis made his return to the NSW Championship and didn’t have the strongest of weekends. After struggling with an engine issue in both qualifying and the opening race, the South Coast based ‘Kent’ class racer bounced back to finish third in class in the second race and fourth in the third and final race. Victorian visitor Michael Hinrichs made a welcomed appearance in the NSW Championship and the Wodonga based driver made a strong finish to the weekend to fifth in the ‘Kent’ class for the final race. With the absence of round one dominator Tom Tweedie in the ‘Classic’ class, who was away contesting, and winning, the latest round of the Formula 3 Championship down in Tasmania, Doug Matley was able to step up and he came away with win in all three races for his class aboard his Reynard. Matley did have to watch his mirrors though with debutant David Grant in his immaculate RF86 Van Diemen having a great first outing. The ‘Historic’ class resulted in veteran John Smith claiming the winning honours for the round. Smith’s speed in the historic Lola had him dicing mid pack with decade’s newer machinery. Smith had a grin from ear to ear after every race and stated “I love this car”. The NSW Formula Ford Championship will now take a short break before it blasts back into action at Eastern Creek Raceway (Sydney, NSW) for the third round on the weekend of June 19 and 20.
