NSW Formula Ford Championship Warfare Invades Oran Park: PDF Print E-mail

Active ImageThe 2006 New South Wales (NSW) Formula Ford Championship resumes at Oran Park Raceway in Narellan this weekend (June 17 - 18) and the driver everyone will be looking knock off is current runaway Championship leader, Icon Motorsport ace Ben Morley.

With the second round held back in late April at Eastern Creek Raceway, the NSW Formula Ford brigade are eager to continue their Championship battle and reel in Morley, who holds a 63 point lead over his nearest rival, CAMS Rising Star Kristian Lindbom.

If recent Oran Park form counts for anything than Morley is in good shape to continue his dominance of the NSW Championship after it was last year when the Newcastle based driver made a cameo appearance in the National Championship round an qualified in an outstanding fifth and scored two Top 10 results in the three races.

Morley doesn't have a whole lot of experience around the 2.62 kilometre Grand Prix circuit, but that shouldn't hold him back especially if his form this year is any indication where he remains undefeated in six races.

The likes of Lindbom, Stephen Payne, Nick Lowe, Glenn Welch, Kyle Wood, Daniel Cotton and a host of others are aiming to get amongst the winners circle. Recent years have seen Oran Park Raceway turn the tables on drivers where the tactical circuit is a place that deserves a lot of respect, and if not it can punish you and recent years have proven that.

A fortnight ago, a number of the NSW Championship racers in the in form of Lindbom, Lowe, Cotton and Andrew Taite compete in the support races at Winton Raceway (Victoria) for the V8 Supercar Series and did very well. Lindbom fared the best out of group with second overall, whilst Lowe, Cotton and Taite recorded Top 10 finishes over the weekend and this should give them all a lot of confidence heading into the Oran Park round.

Lindbom looks the most likely to challenge Morley around Oran Park, but the biggest factor against him might be his lack of Oran Park experience. However, you must not discount Lowe, pole sitter at round two Welch and Payne who have all shown glimpses of brilliance in the opening two rounds.

Although lady luck hasn't been on his side so far in 2006, Queenslander Kyle Wood is overdue for a strong performance and after showing steady pace in round two.

Sydney Team Racing driver Alan Price may not have a lot of Formula Ford experience, but his results indicate that his speed will only improve. After recently making his debut in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, Colin Sieders returns to Formula Ford and is looking to improve his current Championship ranking of 10th.

Anglo Australian Motorsport team drivers, Leigh Burgess and San Pattis, have shown a lot pace, but a run of bad luck has dinted their Championship hopes. For Burgess, who was mighty impressive at the opening round didn't have things go his way in the second round after being ousted via an early crash in qualifying. Due to being a rookie and not completing the mandatory four laps Burgess was unable to complete the rest of the weekend.

Malaysian born Pattis is looking to get onto the podium and if his first two rounds are anything to go by than he is very capable of achieving that. Although there have been a number of unfortunate incidents have seen him fail to get amongst the pointy end of the field, Oran Park just might be when he does.

Oran Park rounds over the past few years of the NSW Formula Ford Championship have been the circuit where upsets occur, could this trend continue? Only time will tell.
