After the exciting duel between Ryan Simpson and Tom Tweedie during the opening round, Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway is set to be the venue for the second round of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship this weekend (May 24 and 25). Simpson and Tweedie, who are both Anglo Australian Motorsport team-mates, duelled it out throughout all three races during the opening round of the NSW Championship at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway last month, and they are no doubt are looking to lock horns once again as they fight it out amongst one another. It was Simpson during the opening round that managed to win all three races and qualify on pole position, but as Tweedie showed throughout the weekend, particularly in race two and three that he is a race winning contender. Tweedie has Simpson in his sights heading into Eastern Creek, and it is of strong belief that he can reach victory lane at some point over the course of the weekend. Aside from the battle between Simpson and Tweedie, there are the likes of fellow Anglo Australian Motorsport driver 16-year-old Nathan Morcom, and then there is Bruce McCabe, Matthew Howard, and Derryn Harrison who are all looking to be amongst the front runners. Newcomers in Adam Lucas, Daniel Lewis, James Stewart, and ex Formula Vee racer Russell Newell are all aiming to continue their learning curves and as a result move further up the field. Making a return to the NSW Championship for the first time in 2008 is Queenslander Tony Chapman, along with Jason Liddell, David Holland, and veteran John Smith. Joining this weekend’s field in second round of the NSW Championship is a bunch of drivers that are contesting the annual Peter Larner Festival for historic Formula Fords. This event series is run will be run throughout 2008 and includes several of the 2008 NSW Championship rounds in amongst the NSW 1600 Championship over the weekend. Amongst the field as part of the Peter Larner Festival series are drivers such as Greg Watson, Rob Tweedie, Cas Galjaardt, Norm Vesty, Doug Matley, and John Pymble. NSW Formula Ford 1600 Association president organiser Jeff Senior is looking forward to the addition of the Historic Formula Fords. “It’s great to have our historic competitors taking the opportunity to have additional races through the NSW Championship,” enthused Senior. “Not only will this give the historic Formula Ford drivers more laps, but it will also give everyone an indication and an understanding of how much the category has evolved over the years.” The race format for round two of the NSW Championship will be qualifying and the opening race on Saturday and both race two and three on the Sunday. |
