NSW Championship Battle Hots Up PDF Print E-mail

The battle for the lead of both the premier ‘Kent’ class and the ‘Fiesta’ class of the NSW Formula Ford Championship reached new levels during last weekend’s fourth and penultimate round at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway.

In both classes there were battles aplenty between the leaders. In the Kent class, current leader Adam Leung and his Anglo Australian Motorsport team-mate Richard Goddard fought hard all weekend; as did Synergy Motorsports’ Stefan Borsato and Listec Racing’s Alan Price in the Fiesta Class.

There was very little that separated the Anglo Australian Motorsport pair throughout the weekend and in the end it was Goddard that ended up winning two of the three races and therefore took out the victory spoils for the round. Current leader of the NSW Championship point standings for the class, Leung qualified second behind Goddard and then romped to victory in the opening race.

Leung looked on track for another victory in the second race only holding off Goddard for 5 of the 10 lap journey, only to circum to the pressure on lap 6 and eventually spinning on the final lap dropping him down to 5th place. The spin put a dampener on what had been a spectacular battle between Goddard and himself. In the third and final race the battle between Leung and Goddard continued but in the end the latter was too strong and claimed the victory.

After contesting the past two Australian Championship rounds, Synergy Motorsport driver Stefan Borsato returned to the ‘Fiesta’ class and managed to walk away with a clean sweep of proceedings. Borsato topped the time sheets overall in qualifying and then won both race one and two in comfortable fashion ahead of Listec Racing driver Alan Price.

In the third and final race Price had made Borsato work very hard to earn his clean sweep for the weekend. Price had paced Borsato throughout the majority of the third and final race up until Borsato was caught up in slower traffic which gave Price the chance to pounce. Price’s lead was short lived after he ran wide coming onto the straight allowing Borsato to slip past. A couple of laps later Borsato did the same, allowing Price to regain the lead temporarily before Borsato was able to execute the race winning pass on the last corner of the final lap.

Aside from all the action at the pointy end of the field Ryan Campbell had one of his strongest weekends ever and managed to finish behind Goddard and Leung in third place in the Kent class for the weekend.

The hard luck story of the weekend was Russell Newell. After qualifying strongly in the ‘Kent’ class Newell suffered engine failure in the process and therefore had to sit out the remainder of the weekend.

On a more positive angle, ex Sports Sedan racer Robert Coulthard, aboard the ex James Stewart Spectrum, showed plenty of promise by recording Top 5 class results in the all three races.

In the ‘Pre 2000’ class Jon Collins continued his impressive debut year in Formula Ford by qualifying quickest in class and claiming all three races for his class. After qualifying second in class, David Grant had a tough run during all three races and in the final race he was the sole retirement due to mechanical issues. In all three races Darryl Hall finished second behind Collins, while Bill Gravanis, who made his first appearance in Formula Ford for nearly 10 years, ended up running strongly to finish in third place in all three races.

Tom Tweedie may be running a 1986 Van Diemen in the ‘Classic’ class but it hasn’t stopped him from mixing it with the Top 5 outright runners. Tweedie finished each of the three races inside the Top 5 outright and was a comfortable class winner, while finishing in second place all weekend in the class was Doug Matley aboard his 1989 Reynard.

The fifth and final round of the NSW Championship is to be held on the weekend of October 23 and 24 at Eastern Creek Raceway.
