Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway staged the second consecutive overall victory for defending champion Ben Morley at round two the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship last weekend (May 19-20) while Rob Storey moved into the championship lead.

With exciting four-wide battles and multiple lead changes throughout, the 3.93km Sydney circuit was dubbed ‘slipstreaming city’ by competitors as the 15-car field provided a thrilling and unpredictable weekend of racing action.

Tight competition saw Morley outrace the opposition with two race wins and a second place, while Storey still managed to claim one win and two seconds overall, enough to pass Morley on the championship standings by five points. Storey earlier topped the qualifying time sheets by nearly a full second ahead of Morley but a reversing of the driver order eventuated by the time the final chequered flag was waved.

Morley (Icon Motorsport Spectrum 09B) overshadowed the competition earlier in Saturday’s first race where a minor driver error on Storey’s part saw him lose the lead from a pole position start, while Anglo Australian Motorsport’s Tom Tweedie finished third ahead of Team Sydney driver Glenn Welch and CAMS Rising Star Daniel Erickson.

Lack of racing carnage again in race two as more close racing resulted between Morley and Storey (Anglo Australian Motorsport Spirit WL07) however the latter remained resilient with a daring outside move at turn one on lap six to take the lead and claim the win four laps later by a narrow two hundredths of a second.

While both are were also fighting for championship honours this year, the hotly contested third and final race saw Storey’s Spirit WL07 miss the start however, both made the most of slipstreaming breaks while continually trading places. It was only Storey’s additional two off-track excursions that put paid to his chances of winning, handing the race and round win to the reigning state champion.

Retiring from the weekend were Welch who suffered mechanical dramas after a consistent run of top four finishes, while Tom Ballard’s Mygale SJ05 produced an engine misfire on lap 10 to be classified a non-finisher.

Former Australian Touring Car racer and National Formula Ford Championship runner John Smith made a cameo appearance in the Don Holland owned Reynard 89FF, which is the actual car Don Griffin raced to record the current race lap record back in 1990.

However, one of the drives of the weekend belonged to Erickson (Spectrum 010B) who achieved his first podium finish of the year after a tough fight with Tweedie in the final race. In fifth place was Chris Goodman ahead of a resilient CAMS Rising Star Scott Pye in sixth.

During Friday’s practice session, Pye suffered substantial crash damage needing to rebuild his Spectrum 010B overnight; an additional thorn in the team’s side after a rebuild was carried out the weekend prior after Pye’s race crash at Sandown Raceway in the Victorian State Series. CAMS team-mate Erickson also needed repairs after damaging the right rear quarter in the same practice session.

Round three of the NSW Formula Ford 1600 State Championship will be held at Oran Park Raceway on the weekend of June 16-17.
