Reigning New South Wales State Formula Ford 1600 champion Ben Morley has hit the championship lead after a clean sweep of wins during the running of round four at Oran Park Raceway (Narellan, NSW) last weekend (July 21-22).

Starting strong from pole position, the #1 Icon Motorsport Spectrum 09B steerer drove a stellar campaign by dominating all three races in close and fast on-track action. Currently leading the championship by seven points after what was his third round victory, Morley now sits ahead of archrival Rob Storey (Anglo Australian Motorsport Spirit WL07) who finished in the runner-up position for all sessions throughout the weekend.

Chris Goodman (Spectrum 010B) was a welcomed strong competitor scoring his best results to date. With a consistent and cool approach, he raced to third in both the first two races before contact with competitor Tom Tweedie (Anglo Australian Motorsport Stealth Van Diemen) in the third and final Trophy race dampened his weekend. Spinning off at turn two and unable to restart, his Spectrum 010B was sent to the infield after a safety car intervention, ending his racing prematurely.

Third placed qualifier Glenn Welch (Team Sydney Motorsport Listec Wil05) resurrected a horrible start to the weekend after dropping back to 14th at the start of race one. Fighting hard to finish tenth in race one, Welch climbed to sixth in the second race and onto the podium in the third and final Trophy race with a third place. Staying with the likes of Morley and Storey, Welch also set the fastest race lap of the third race to claim his second podium of the year.

As expected, CAMS Rising Stars drivers Daniel Erickson (Spectrum 010B) and Scott Pye (Spectrum 010B) stuck close to hold off competition from Tweedie, Goodman and Welch. While both fought for top five positions all weekend, Pye didn’t get the best of starts in race one while also coming together with his CAMS Rising Star team-mate which resulted in a DNF and front end damage. Starting from rear of grid in race two, Pye climbed up to eighth and further ahead to sixth by weekend’s end while Erickson managed fifth overall for the round.

Reigning South Australian champion Jake Chapman was a consistent top ten runner over the weekend. After qualifying eighth and scoring a sixth and seventh in the first two races, Chapman was in podium contention until Welch raced ahead in the final stages, leaving him fourth overall, his strongest finish so far this year by far.

Former Australian Touring Car racer John Smith had a solid run in his Don Holland Racing Reynard 91FF. Finishing inside the top ten all weekend, Smith scored ninth, ninth and eighth in the three races earning him commendation considering the age of his car. For Smith this was his second outing in the Don Holland Racing owned car.

Wakefield Park Raceway (Goulburn, NSW) on August 11-12 is the venue and date set down for round five of the NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship.

The latest NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings:
1 Ben Morley – 237 points
2 Rob Storey - 230
3 Daniel Erickson - 190
4 Tom Tweedie - 182
5 Glenn Welch - 165
