thumb_0801a.jpgThe NSW State Formula Ford 1600 Championship will be invaded by a number of new faces going into the opening round of 2008 this weekend (April 12 and 13) at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway.

New drivers going the 2008 opener of the NSW State Championship include former multiple National and NSW State Formula Vee Champion Ryan Simpson and recently turned 16-year-old Nathan Morcom who just a few weekends ago picked up his maiden National Go Karting Championship.

Both Simpson and Morcom will drive for the Anglo Australian Motorsport team in 2008 and with plenty of success achieved from them both in their previous categories and the experience of the Anglo Australian Motorsport these two drivers look in good stead for a competitive transition into Formula Ford.

Remaining with the Anglo Australian Motorsport team for 2008 is Tom Tweedie who finished fourth in last year’s NSW State Championship and he is no doubt looking to improve on that position and contend for podium finishers.

Aside from the Anglo Australian Motorsport team, other NSW State Championship contenders include the likes of Matthew Howard, Queenslander Tony Chapman, Matt McGill, and a host of others.

Other drivers looking for a consistent run of results throughout the NSW State Championship are names such as Icon Motorsport team owner Derryn Harrison, Victorian youngster Luke Ellery, and second year racer Bruce McCabe, and a few more newcomers, which include the likes of Adam Lucas, Daniel Lewis, James Stewart and Russell Newell set to join the Formula Ford ranks.

With the top 3 from last year’s NSW State Championship Rob Storey, Ben Morley and Daniel Erickson, stepping up to the National Formula Ford Championship, along with Scott Pye and Victorian Jake Chapman, the NSW State Championship is undergoing a rebuilding phase in 2008.

“In 2008 the NSW State Championship is going through a rebuilding process and with a number of new and very talented drivers joining the championship it is set to be an exciting year ahead,” said NSW Formula Ford 1600 Club director Stephen Austin.

“It is great that despite a number of the front runners from last year’s NSW State Championship moving up to National level that new talent has been filtered through, and this is just another example of why Formula Ford is a great stepping stone to establishing a career in motorsport.”

The race format for the opening round of the NSW State Championship will be qualifying and the opening race on Saturday and both race two and three on the Sunday.
