For the second occasion this year, the 2010 NSW Formula Ford Championship will return to Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway this weekend (June 19 and 20) where the third round is to be battled out.
Regarded as one of the fastest and daunting circuits in the country, Eastern Creek Raceway always provides plenty of close and exciting race action and this weekend should be no different. In the Championship class, Anglo Australian Motorsport driver Adam Leung will be keen to continue his great form from round two where he took the championship lead from team mate, Richard ‘Spike’ Goddard. Whilst both Leung and Goddard have their sights set on continuing their successful starts to the year they will be kept honest with the likes of Ryan Campbell, Icon Motorsport’s Derryn Harrison, Listec Racing driver Russell Newell and Daniel Lewis snapping at their heels. The ‘Fiesta’ class, which is the newest class to be involved in the NSW Championship, has turned out to be very fiercely fought and there is no doubt that trend is going to continue. Round one round winner and class leader Daniel Cotton, from the Synergy Motorsport team, will be hard pressed keeping current second placeholder Alan Price from Listec Racing behind him. Price gave the Sydney based team their first race victory at the last round and has given notice that with only two points between them the chase for class honours is wide open. The Pre-2000 class leader Darryl Hall will continue his battle with Jon Collins but will be kept busy by the likes of John Pereira, Andrew Lydon and returning Formula Ford stalwart Jeff Senior. Following their strong performances in the pre-2000 class, Hall and Collins also lead the Rookie championship. They are however under pressure from Emma Brown in the Anglo Australian Motorsport Comtec Spirit who is gaining ground and experience with each race. The ‘Classic’ class leader, Doug Mately will have a host of challengers this weekend with the return of Tom Tweedie, Rob Rowe and Ross Firth. Joining the tussle will be Lynton Wettone, who is set to debut his immaculate RF86 Van Diemen, and is looking for a strong result. Don’t let the age of the cars mislead you, Tweedie finished third outright at his last visit to the NSW Championship and is certainly one to keep an eye on. This weekend Garry Watson will take over the driving duties from his father in the Historic Mawer, and will no doubt have the Mawer well up the field. In the historic class he will be joined by John Tarran in the beautiful Lotus 61M. With this year’s being a championship within a championship, the NSW Championship is openly contested and no matter where you look this weekend you’re going to visit some exciting racing around the fast flowing Eastern Creek circuit. This weekend’s third round of the NSW Championship is going to kick off on Saturday with a qualifying session and the opening race, and on Sunday both race two and three will be fought out. Spectator entry is free both days! |
