The 2010 NSW Formula Ford Championship resumed over the weekend at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway with the running of the third round and there was certainly no shortage of action.
Despite the third and final race of the weekend cancelled due to a crash on the second lap between John Pereira and newcomer Andrew Lyon; the third round of the NSW Championship resulted in class wins overall for the weekend shared between Richard ‘Spike’ Goddard (Kent), Daniel Cotton (Fiesta), Tom Tweedie (Classic) and Garry Watson (Historic). In the Championship ‘Kent’ class Adam Leung (Spirit WL08), who drives for the Anglo Australian Motorsport team, was able to continue his solid form so far this year by qualifying on front row beside pole sitter and Anglo Australian Motorsport team mate Richard “Spike” Goddard. Leung went onto finish second in race one and take out race two to consolidate his lead in the NSW Championship point standings. Leung’s closest rival Goddard (Spirit WL10), took pole and race one but had to settle for second behind Leung in the second race It was unfortunate that the third and final race was cancelled as it was going to be interesting to see between Leung and Goddard who came out on top. Rookie Jon Collins (Van Diemen RF92), who is also a pilot for the Anglo Australian Motorsport team, showed plenty of impressive speed over the weekend and was rewarded with an impressive third in qualifying followed by solid fourth and third place finishes. The likes of Ryan Campbell (Van Diemen RF00), Derryn Harrison (Spectrum 09) and Daniel Lewis (Van Diemen RF02) enjoyed a battle amongst themselves in both race one and two. Campbell ended up winning the battle in both races, while Lewis suffered engine failure in the second race that cut short his weekend. Synergy Motorsport team driver Daniel Cotton (Spectrum 011) fought out with arch rival Alan Price (Listec WIL-013) from Listec Racing in the ‘Fiesta’ class and came out on top. Cotton qualified on pole position and won both races, while Price played the role of follow the leader throughout the weekend. Tom Tweedie’s speed aboard his Van Diemen RF86 continued to be able to fight it out with his more modern machine campaigned rivals by finishing third and fourth in the races after race long battles with Collins These results once again saw him come out on top in the ‘Classic’ class. The Australian Formula 3 Championship contender was able to defeat Robert Rowe (Mondiale M895) and Doug Mately (Reynard 89F), who both finished strongly in the top ten all weekend. In his return to NSW Championship competitor; Garry Watson (Mawer 004) dominated proceedings in the ‘Historic’ class by taking out qualifying and also both race one and two. Fellow ‘Historic’ class rival John Tarran (Lotus 61M) made his debut in the NSW Championship and ended up finishing second overall for the weekend in the class. Former Production Car racer Sue Hughes (Van Diemen RF91) joined Emma Brown (Comtec K08) in the ‘Kent’ class to take up the fight to their male rivals. Both Hughes and Brown competed in the ‘Kent’ class and ran strongly all weekend. In fact, Brown recorded the best result of her rookie year when she finished 10th in the “Kent class” outright in the second race. The quote of the round had to go to John Pereira after the unfortunate accident on the second lap of the cancelled third race. After exiting his car after rolling three times in the turn one gravel trap, he looked at the remains of his car and question the track officer assisting him “ I hope someone got that on video”. Pereira stated later he intends to have the car repaired for the fifth and final round back in October. The fourth and penultimate round of the NSW Championship is going to be held on the weekend of August 28 and 29 at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway.
