It has been confirmed that the NSW Formula Ford Championship is expanding in 2010 with the inclusion of Fiesta Class Formula Fords.
The Fiesta Class cars are the current National Formula Ford Championship class, and have successfully integrated into the Victorian Formula Ford Championship this year. The organisers have received the necessary approval for their inclusion, and are currently finalising the regulations relating to their participation. “Allowing these class cars into the NSW Championship will add a new level of excitement to our Championship” series organiser Jeff Senior commented. “The cars are quick and comparable with the 1600 class cars, although normally about 2 – 3 seconds per lap quicker”. The 2010 NSW Formula Ford Championship will cater for all Formula Ford 1600 class cars (including pre-2000 and pre-1990), Historic Formula Fords, and the Formula Ford Fiesta Class. Outright Championship status is to be retained for the Formula Ford 1600-class cars. Unlike the race procedures in other States, the Fiesta and 1600 cars will not be separated during competition, but race as a single category, as do other class structured categories. “This decision will bring Formula Ford back to its roots, whereby a competitor can run in State level racing, and compete in the occasional National Meeting should budget and desire permit” commented fellow series organiser Stephen Austin. “We have always been keen to have these cars within our programme, but wanted to ensure the timing was right to protect those competitors who have invested in 1600 class cars, as well as give the necessary support to the National Championship”. Several teams have indicated their interest in entering Fiesta cars, including current NSW Championship team Anglo Australian Motorsport, as well as current Australian Championship winning team, Synergy Motorsport. Synergy Motorsport Team owner Justin Cotter remarked, “I am looking forward to fielding cars in the NSW Championship again after my previous successful years there”. Cotter previously looked after John Martin, and Paul Laskazeski during their campaigns in the championship, as well as Kristian Lindbom, before concentrating on the National Championship. “I have had various drivers keen to race these cars in State and do one or two National Meetings, but the restrictions didn’t allow it. I expect more drivers will do the State Championship now, and this will mean more competitors for the National Championship”. The calendar for the 2010 NSW Formula Ford Championship has not yet been released; however, it is expected to start in April 2010 covering 3 rounds at Eastern Creek Raceway and 2 rounds at Wakefield Park Raceway. |
