The 2008 NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship will make a return to Oran Park Raceway (Narellan, NSW) this weekend (July 26 – 27) for the fourth round and it is certainly going to be interesting if the previous round action is of any indication.
Current NSW Championship leader and Anglo Australian Motorsport team driver Ryan Simpson is the one everyone will be chasing and after three rounds he has won eight out of nine races, but this weekend he is sure to have things not so easy. Anglo Australian Motorsport teammate, Tom Tweedie, is looking to bridge the gap between himself and Simpson, and is certainly going to prove his toughest threat. With his confidence rising with every outing Tweedie is at good odds to break through for a maiden round victory. Oran Park Raceway is the type of circuit where anything can happen as it has technical aspects and it certainly requires a lot of talent from drivers that want to run at the pointy end of the field. Aside from Simpson and Tweedie, who have both been the shining lights so far this year in the NSW Championship, the likes of teenager Nathan Morcom, Daniel Lewis, Adam Lucas, and Bruce McCabe are eager to run at the front of the field. Lewis managed to score his very first podium finish with a third place at the previous round and is wanting to land another finish of that kind. Both Morcom and Lucas have shown that they have the pace to contend for podiums finishers, as is Bruce McCabe, who is currently third in the championship point standings. Other drivers that you cannot discount and are also in search for strong results over the weekend are drivers such as Matthew Howard, Derryn Harrison, James Stewart, and Russell Newell. The historic Formula Fords will also be part of round four and the driver everyone is chasing is Greg Watson, and as he has done on many occasions so far this year he gives some of the later model cars a run for their money. Round four of the NSW Championship is certainly going to be an interesting affair with this being the first circuit that the competitors will be returning to this year, so everyone will be able to build on the data that they gained from round three. The race format for the fourth round of the NSW Championship will see qualifying and race one on Saturday and race two and three on Sunday. Latest NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship point standings (after three completed rounds): 1 Ryan Simpson – 266 points2 Tom Tweedie – 230 3 Bruce McCabe – 166 4 Adam Lucas – 148 5 Daniel Lewis – 148 For more information about the NSW Formula Ford 1600 Championship or Oran Park Raceway visit: www.ff1600.org.au or www.oranpark.com.au |
